There are three different types of rowing machine, models that offer air resistance, hydraulic resistance or magnetic resistance. Air resistance is usually provided with good quality rowing machines. How it works, is that the resistance is channelled by a finned flywheel sucking in air as the arm is being pulled back. Resistance adjustment appears fluid and without steps thus the faster you row the more resistance results. A benefit of the air rower is that it effectively simulates real rowing. A hydraulic rower fails to simulate real rowing mainly because it relies on manually adjusted clamps. The movement is not as fluid as the air rower but despite this a good workout is ultimately achieved.
And what about the water rowing machine? Surely, that’s real rowing isn’t it, I hear you cry! Well, not exactly! There is another rowing machine recognised for cleverly balancing its resistance with water, the WaterRower Club Rowing machine. The provider of an effective workout, it is a make of rower and not a specific sort of rower.
